Inkwell wines references music in their wine names. Deeper Well? Emmylou Harris? Maybe. But Deeper Well Records is a non-profit Christian record label based in Portland, Oregon. Their mantra, “to record and release great music that communicates the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We want to provide music that is an alternative to the CCM saturated, mainstream Christian music market”. Amen, Dudley Brown of Inkwell wines! Maybe this inspiration (unlikely) is the wing and prayer kind of needed for a $70 release out of 2011? Ey? Dudley knows his way. A statement, and likely damn good wine.
It’s not got a lot of stuffing but it’s sure got tannins. Don’t let that put you off, it’s a wine of structure and sinew, just not pretty, but not all wines are in full. It’s beautiful in heady perfume that runs from cassis to musk to leather to black plums. The palate is firm and deep, brooding. It’s long in its drag across the palate. Brutalist architecture in glass. I like it.

Deeper Well requires deep pockets at $70 a bottle. If it’s any consolation, it’s worth it. Released at five years old, it is drinking beautifully. The balance is evident from first sip, the power ripples across the palate and the flavours are full and rich but in no way overblown. 95 points.
