2016 Inkwell Blonde on Blonde Viognier

The Wine front - Review by mike bennie

Picked to produce a respectable 11.8% alcohol, so you guess it will be at the other end of the slippery/rich/full viognier spectrum. Wild ferment and time in older oak barrels helps lay some foundations for the wine. From the home vineyard of Dudley and Irina Brown in McLaren Vale.

Complex, fulfilling viognier scents of apricot (flesh and the stone), marzipan, sea spray, oyster shell. A mineral-packed feel to the palate with supple texture yet shows a DNA thread of saline acidity underlying. It’s got some juiciness, light stone fruit character, zip and dart, good length. Indeed, this is a fantastic drink; perhaps not the complexity of 2015,but lots of charisma, without the stuffing. It’s sort of crying out for something savoury alongside too. Really nicely done.
